THE PHOTOGRAPHER
David Entrikin has been taking the photographs for OUTSIDERS since 2005. He has searched much of Seattle for his subjects, photographing between 5am and noon almost every Sunday of the year. Since the fall of 2007 he has concentrated on the people living under the I-5 freeway, in the Pioneer Square area and under the Highway 99 Viaduct. He has discovered much humanity and has found many friends among his subjects.
He says, “It is a humbling experience to spend so much time among good people in unfortunate circumstances. They are lonely, sick, broke, confused, afraid and know that they are often not wanted but never-the-less show great perseverance, hope , love and fortitude. I hope I have presented them in an honest, accurate and sincere manner. I have shared their conversations, meals, stories and prayers. It has been an enlightening experience.”
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
All the photographs were taken with Nikon D-100 and D-200 digital cameras. All photos were taken “hand held”.
The smaller exhibit photographs in the photo montages were printed with a Canon I-9900 ink jet printer. The larger photographs and the poster were printed using a Canon IPF 8100 wide format printer using their long life Lucia Inks. These are both incredible machines which have produced accurate, detailed renditions of the digital images. The viewer gets to see what the photographer was seeing when the photo was taken.
Imaging software includes: AcDsee Pro 2 for photo organization and exposure control, Adobe Photoshop CV3 for photo management and Canon Poster Artist V.2 for the poster design as well as the blow-up sizing and printer interface.
The Photographs were printed on Moab Lasal Photo Matte Paper. The portraits are on Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper
The exhibit web site is a collaborative effort of David Entrikin and Skye & Natalie Overby of Steerboard LLC. Skye is a computer, web and marketing wizard who we cannot live without.
Printer expertise and training was wonderfully handled by Tom Ridge, Canon Technical expert at Seattle’s Copiers Northwest. Tom also provided printing services for the exhibit mailer.
Design for the exhibit announcement, the OUTSIDERS poster, the One Night Count Poster as well as the photo montages and framing are all by Nellie Entrikin, 2007 Graduate of the Pratt Institute of Fine Arts in Brooklyn, NY and a genius at turning a rough concept into an amazing artistic and graphic reality.
Frames and stands were built by Chris Aldrich and were finished by John Arcana both from the outstanding crew at Ballard Bookcase Company.
