David Entrikin: Outsiders

David Entrikin’s hobby is photography. And his subject matter—the homeless—is so often photographed by pros that supermodels must be getting jealous. Forgive me, then, that when I first heard of Entrikin’s show “Outsiders” (on view through Nov. 14), I dismissed it faster than Greg Nickels can sweep said homeless out of greenbelts. But Entrikin’s work humbled me (and a whole lot of paid photojournalists). The sheer size of his nearly 1,500-image exhibit, shot over the last three years from Pioneer Square to Aurora Ave., to grants insight into homeless life better than any of the all-too-common black-and-white homeless portraits. Those shots scream outsider; Entrikin’s photos have an intimacy to them. Their quality and stunning color amidst bleak circumstances lends meaning to the saying, “It’s not the camera that matters, it’s all in the photographer.” Even if this photographer says he’s only a hobbyist.
